I've been asked often to comment on the unfortunate events surrounding the James Arthur Ray sweat lodge deaths in Arizona (Ray is a "teacher" from the popular movie The Secret). I did a long blog post about how people are persuaded to death here that reveals how these coercive leaders convince people to do things that are clearly not in their best interest and can even be deadly.
I also did an hour long teleseminar with Michael Lovitch of Hypnosis Network where we talk about coercive leaders, mind control, The Secret, the need for critical thinking and much more. It is a much more detailed discussion of coercion and unethical persuasion, it is very much worth the listen.
This is rough issue for a lot of people. But the crux has to be "responsibility"
Ultimately, who is "response - able" ?

Teachers are great but you have to own your own power and develop your intuition or "follow your gut" as they used to say.
